Isabel Jones

Isabel Mary Jones was born in John's Island, South Carolina on August 6th, 1918, the eighth of twelve children, to the union of the late Susan and Alfred Hunter, and was the widow of the late Arthur Jones.

Upon the conclusion of her education at Burke High School in John's Island, South Carolina, Isabel relocated to Harlem, New York and established new roots there. In New York, she met and fell in love with military veteran Arthur Jones, a native of Charleston County, South Carolina as well - and they began to build their family. Isabel found occupation in domestic caregiving, specializing in child care.

A devout Christian, Isabel practiced The Word daily, by regularly reading the scriptures at sunrise and sunset, and heavy involvement in the church communities of Harlem (Saint James AME Church, Grace Temple Church), and John's Island (St. James AME Church). Isabel was known as a cornerstone of her religious and residential communities; her heart and home were always open to anyone in need. Many family members who migrated North, temporarily in the 60's and 70's, Isabel welcomed into her home to live until establishing themselves further. No relative was ever distant.

Her passion for family, children, and religion were among those readily viewable, however fans of this phenomenal woman and domestic goddess also knew her strong interests for horticulture, gospel & soul music, the culinary arts, wrestling, and The Dodgers baseball team. Her home was full of joy, light and laughter, and always open to the Harlem neighborhood for fellowship. A natural mentor, she provided maternal guidance not only to her children, but to the community at large, with grace, felicity and joy.

Isabel Mary Jones will be remembered not only for her amazing culinary delights, flawless skin in her 90s, zeal for life, family and God, but for her constant words of encouragement, and optimistic perspective to always see the best in everyone. We were fortunate to not only see a person this divine, but know her; and she will be forever missed.

After celebrating her 100th New Year, God welcomed Isabel into his abundance when she exited this earth on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019 at 10:54pm.
