Melvin Alexander Puryear, Jr. was born in Gissen, Germany on June 24, 1947. He was preceded in death by his parents, Magdelene (Maxine) Puryear and Melvin Puryear, Sr. Melvin passed away on November 2, 2021.
Melvin grew up in East Orange, New Jersey. He spent his teen years in Perry, Florida where he graduated from high school in 1965. He returned to East Orange after high school and began working at East Orange General Hospital as a Pharmacy Technician. He had several jobs in between and finally retired from Lucent Technologies, Inc., a telecommunications company.
Melvin was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in November 1963. He married his love, Norma, in July 1969. Together, they raised three children, Arlene, Kevin and Brandis. He and Norma were married 50 years before she passed away December 6, 2019.
In caring for his family, he was a hard worker always seeking to be a good provider for his family. He hardly ever missed a day of work and was recognized often with awards for perfect attendance. As a servant of Jehovah, he did his best to guide his family in the way of the truth. As an elder in the congregation, he also helped others by providing instruction, guidance and comfort. He particularly appreciated being a listening ear and a help to those who experienced hardships.
Melvin experienced many joys. Norma loved the beach, and they could be found having fun with the kids and friends at various beaches. He and Norma were partners playing cards and would entertain friends at their home in card games. They would often attend conventions out of town and make a vacation out of it taking the kids to amusement parks and other fun places. Melvin loved jazz music. He enjoyed jazz concerts and would often play his air piano and drums, while humming. He was affectionately called "Poddie" by his family and he loved the laughter and jokes his family would bring. He appreciated the many friendships he cultivated in East Orange, Roselle and Willingboro.
Melvin leaves cherished memories with his three children: Arlene Deas (Cory), Kevin Scott and Brandis Puryear. His three grandchildren: Kevyn Scott, Seth Scott and Brandon Puryear, his cousins and a large spiritual family.
